What is a music video?

A music video can be defined as a short film or a sequence of visuals which accompanies a piece of music.

Purposes of a music video:

• Marketing technique - Nowadays, music videos most important purpose is to sell both the artist(s) and the music. Thousands of pounds are spent perfecting the video and the bigger the artist, the bigger the budget.The music video can gain the artist popularity which means more money. As artists are so influential,factors such as setting, costume, make up and props are very important to create the best video there can be.
• Convey song meaning - Most music videos convey lyrical/song meaning via the visuals in the music video. The narrative is either told from the artists perspective or by other characters/actors. A collection from a variety of clips (different setting, costume,character etc) produces song meaning. The visuals portray a certain mood or theme that the song is supposed to be saying. However, not every video conveys song meaning.
