- Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics - For example, a stage performance would represent a metal video, where as a choreographed dance routine would represent a pop boy/girl band.

- There is a relationship between music and visuals - The visuals will match the rhythm of the music. For example, the editing will be in time with the beat or foot steps match the tempo of the song.
- The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work -
- There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body - There are normally close ups/tilt shots of the female artists body.
- There is often intertextual reference - There is normally reference to other medias such as films, TV programmes, other music videos and so on.
